RUSSIAN ALPHABET - РУССКИЙ АЛФАВИТ

The Russian alphabet is similar, but has more letters than the Greek Alphabet. It is called Cyrillic in honor to Saint Cyril (827-869 d.C.). As you can see below, you have to very careful with some consonants that look similar, but are different than the English counterparts:
  • The Russian В в is the English V v
  • The Russian Р р is the English R r.
  • The Russian С с is the English S s.
  • The Russian Н н is the English N n.
Also the vowels can be very confusing ...
  • The Russian  У у is transcribed as the Latin U u and pronounced as oo in school.
  • The Russian  Е е is pronounced  ye as in yes.
  • The Russian  Ё ё (with two dots on top) is pronounced yo as in your.
  • The Russian  Ю ю is pronounced  yu as in you.
  • There are hard vowels: А а, Э э, У у,   Ο ο, Ы ы, (A a, E e, U u, O o, I i).
  • And also soft vowels  : Я я, Е е, Ю ю, Ё ё,  И и,  (ya,  ye,  yu,   yo,   yi).
